Tucson's Fourth Avenue District

Lined with chic thrift-stores, exotic clothing boutiques, smoke shops, ethnic food restaurants, and cocktail lounges, this is an ideal place to people-watch, and there are some really good places to eat and treasures to be found in the quirky shops. Beware the young men and women of the bohemian persuasion who spend their days panhandling along the street.

Twice a year, in fall and spring, the area closes to vehicle traffic for the 4th Avenue Street Fair featuring artisan booths, concerts, and greasy food galore. Fourth Avenue is between downtown and the University District, just a short walk from campus, and on Friday and Saturday nights expect hoards of college kids out looking for inebriation. It’s best to avoid driving in this area on weekend nights altogether.

The Old Pueblo Trolley (520/792-1802, 6–10 p.m. Fri., noon–midnight Sat., $1 each way, 50 cents for kids 6–12), an historic electric streetcar, runs from 4th Avenue to University Boulevard and on to UA’s Main Gate. The trolley also runs noon–6 p.m. on Sunday, when the fare drops to $0.25 each way for everyone. You can board the trolley at various marked stops along the route.
