Arizona Strip Restaurants

Fredonia

Sage House Grill at Juniper Lodge

(465 South Main, 928/643-7712, www.juniperlodge.info, 6 a.m.-10 p.m. daily, $3-$10 breakfast and lunch, $9-$19 dinner)

The best place to stop in Fredonia is the Juniper Lodge ($59.99 d), a clean and affordable place that was remodeled in 2007 (it was formerly called the Crazy Jug Motel). The lodge’s Sage House Grill has a river-runner theme and serves excellent breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, all of them hearty and rib-sticking and thoughtfully prepared: thick stacks of flap-jacks and “Colorado-river-style” oatmeal, burgers—including one smothered in chili—named after river rapids, and even pork chops and pot roast. There’s also an RV park on site ($18.50).

The Kaibab Plateau

Jacob Lake Inn

(Junction of 89A and AZ 67, 928/643-7232, www.jacoblake.com, $94-$133 for rooms, television and Internet available in some, for cabins $75-$122, , 6:30 a.m.-10 p.m.)

The primary services area for the Kaibab Plateau is the Jacob Lake Inn, about a 40 miles from the North Rim at the junction of U.S. 89 A and AZ 67. The complex has a small, relatively new hotel building, several rustic (though not necessarily in a good way) cabins, a restaurant, giftshop, small general store, bakery, and a gas station. May have variable hours in winter; call ahead before planning on a stop. The restaurant serves good comfort food, warm and filling.

Cliff Dwellers and House Rock Valley

Cliff Dweller’s Lodge

(800/962-9755, 928/355-2261, www.cliffdwellerslodge.com, $75/$85 day)

The small Cliff Dweller’s Lodge is nearly drowned by the scenery around it, tucked beneath the base of the red cliffs. This lodge and restaurant offers nice rooms with satellite television, and serves good breakfasts, lunches, and dinners ($10-$25)—everything from fajitas and ribs, to falafels and halibut.

Lee’s Ferry Lodge at Vermillion Cliffs

(89A near Marble Canyon, 928/355-2231, 800/451-2231, www.leesferrylodge.com, $63 day)

Lee’s Ferry Lodge at Vermillion Cliffs has comfortable rooms and a delicious restaurant serving hearty fare perfect after a long day of outdoor play, and their beer selection (they offer more than one hundred different bottles) is outrageously diverse for such an out of the way place. The steaks are hand cut, and the ribs are outstanding, smothered in the lodge’s special, homemade sauce. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily ($10-$20).
