East Valley Lodging

$50–100

The Twin Palms

(225 E. Apache Blvd., Tempe, 480/967-9431, www.twinpalmshotel.com, $79–159)

The Twin Palms right near Arizona State University is a good bargain; it has a pool, free high-speed Internet, complimentary breakfast, and access to ASU’s huge fitness and recreation center. It’s close to everything in Tempe and the East Valley and isn’t too far from central Phoenix. The rooms are basic and comfortable, and each one has a refrigerator and a microwave.

Mezona Inn

(250 W. Main St., Mesa, 480/834-9233, www.mezonainn .com, $69–169 day)

Another good bargain is the Mezona Inn, located in downtown Mesa, with a pool and clean, basic rooms.

$150–250

The Fiesta Inn

(2100 S. Priest Dr., Tempe, 480/967-1441, www.fiestaresrot.com, $149–189)

The Fiesta Inn in Tempe, a favorite among visiting ASU parents, isn’t the only Valley hotel to call itself Frank Lloyd Wright–inspired, but it is certainly the most affordable. This sumptuous but nottoo- pricey resort has tasteful Old Southwest– style rooms and common areas, acres of saltillo tile, and sharp, rustic-looking decor all around. It has a big glistening blue pool, heated in the winter, a great restaurant and lounge with complimentary finger foods at happy hour, and service that rivals much pricier places.

Over $250

Tempe Mission Palms

(60 E. 5th St., Tempe, 480/894-1400, www.missionpalms.com, $259 day)

The Tempe Mission Palms in downtown Tempe is a beautiful property, with a huge pool and tennis courts on the roof overlooking the entire valley. It has its own cozy bar and restaurant, and is within walking distance to the shops and restaurants on Mill; the rooms have a Southwest style and the courtyards are lush and watered. This is the most luxurious place to stay in Tempe, and a bit less pricey than similarly appointed places in Phoenix.
